PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Jill Camburn's (Doylestown, Pa.) first half goal proved to be the difference in the Providence College women’s soccer team’s 1-0 victory over Massachusetts on Sunday, September 21 at Glay Field. With the win, Providence improves to 5-2 (0-1 BIG EAST) on the season, while the Minutewomen fall to 3-2-2.

The Friars opened the scoring midway through the first half. After gaining possession 30 yards out, Camburn raced towards the goal. UMass goalkeeper Lauren Luckey initially broke the play up, but deflected the ball behind her. Camburn gained control and tapped the ball into the net to give PC a 1-0 lead. Luckey made four of her seven saves in the first half.

Providence’s best chance for a goal in the second half came during the 84th minute. Senior Victoria Neff (Fairfield, Conn.) fed junior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) a pass at the top of the Minutewomen box. Ricciardi took a shot past three defenders that sailed over the net.

Friar goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) recorded her third clean sheet of the season while making four saves. The Friars outshot UMass 17-7 during the contest. UMass had the edge in corner kicks, 7-2.

Providence will return to action on Thursday, September 26 for a BIG EAST contest with Marquette. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
