WEST HARTFORD, CONN. -- After trailing for most of the game, the Providence College women’s soccer team scored two goals in the final five minutes of regulation to defeat the Hartford Hawks, 2-1, on Thursday, September 11 in West Hartford, Conn. The Friars improve to 4-1 on the season while the Hawks fall to 2-3-2.

The Hawks began the scoring late in the first half as Kacey Busque sent a shot over the head of PC goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) to give Hartford a 1-0 lead.

Providence got on the board late in the second half. In the 85th minute, senior Christie Gent (Plantation, Fl.) sent a corner into the Hawk box. After goalkeeper Lauren Brodeur stopped the initial save off a headball, senior Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) took the rebound and put it in the back of the net for a 1-1 game. It marked Mancarella’s first goal this season. Five minutes later, with only 17 seconds left in regulation, Friar sophomore Lindsey Trubia (Mystic, Conn.) sent a cross in front of the Hartford goal from the far corner. Brodeur attempted to deflect the ball out of play, but was unable. Freshman Courtney Collins (North Wales, Penn.) connected with a header into the back of the net to seal the 2-1 victory for the Friars. It marks Collins’ third goal of the season and third straight game with a goal.

Schott stopped one ball on five Hawk shots during the contest. Brodeur was tested throughout the game, making seven saves on 21 Friar attempts. Providence had the advantage in corner kicks by a 9-3 margin.

The Friars will return home on Sunday, September 14 to take on the Davidson Wildcats at Glay Field. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon.
