BOSTON, Mass. - The Northeastern University Huskies defeated the Providence College Friars, 2-1, in women's college soccer action on Sunday, September 6 at Wentworth's Sweeney Field.

Freshman Elise Day got her Northeastern career off to a fast start as she scored twice in the first half to lead the Huskies to a season opening victory.

Day's first goal came at 2:16 off a feed from freshman Melissa Cohen. She found the back of the net again at 36:48 when she converted a pass from Mia Kiistala past PC's Shayna Ross for a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Friars were able to get some pressure in the second half and finally broke through when Alexa Ricardo set up Michelle Caravana for her first goal of the season just under ten minutes into the second half.

Northeastern's Michelle Cochran held the Friars off the rest of the way as she made seven saves in goal for the Huskies. Ross made 11 saves in goal for Providence.

The loss drops PC to 0-2 on the young season while Northeastern is 1-0 for the year.

The Friars return to action on Wednesday, September 9 when they open BIG EAST league play against the University of Connecticut. Game time at PC's Glay Field is 3:30 p.m.
