HANOVER,N.H.-- The Providence College women's soccer team fell to the University of Minnesota, 3-0 in the Dartmouth Classic in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Friars fall to 0-2-1 on the season while the Gophers move to 1-2-0 on the year.
The Friars hung tough with the Gophers in the first half with senior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) making two of her seven saves during the opening period.The Gophers then opened the scoring in the 2nd half with a goal from Kaitlin Wagner in the 47th minute. Wagner took a pass from Katie Bethke and took a hard shot into the top left corner of the net.
Minnesota then scored in the 81st minute when Bethke took a shot after Elfers came out in defense. The Gophers then got its third tally on an own goal in the 85th minute.
Sophomore Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.) took three of the Friars nine shots during the game. Minnesota finished with 22 shots. Laura Elfers made seven saves for the Friars during the contest while fellow goalkeeper Chelsea Turner had three stops for Minnesota. The Gophers took 13 corner kicks during the game while Providence had three.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, September 9th as they take on Cal-Poly in the Dartmouth Classic at 10:00 a.m.
