The Providence College women's soccer team won its second straight home game of the 2012 season on Friday, August 31, with a 4-0 win over Lehigh. Three different Friars tallied goals in the game, but freshman Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) led the way with two.
The Friars jumped out to an early lead scoring in the fifth minute of play. The goal came from a freshman connection between Kathryn Hiller (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Zimmerman. Hiller headed a cross to Zimmerman who found the back of the net from six yards out. The Friars second goal came in the 20th minute when Kerry Ann O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y.) connected with Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell , P.a.). DiClemente's strike raise her goal count to three on the season. The Friars took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Friars capitalized on two corner kick opportunities in the second half. Their third goal of the match came in the 65th minute of play when Zimmerman headed in DiClemente's corner kick, marking her second goal of the game. Providence's final goal came in the 87th minute when freshman Morgan Thomasian (Manasquan, N.J.) tallied her first points as a Friar. Thomasian finished a corner served up by senior Mary Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.).
The Friar defense held the Mountain Hawks to four shots on goal, and sophomore goalkeeper, Jessica Goudreault (Sherborn , Mass.) finished the game with two saves.
Providence outshot Lehigh, 17-4 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-0. The Friars improved their record to 2-2-1, while Lehigh fell to 0-2-0.
The Friars are set to play Central Connecticut State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 2 in New Britain, Conn.
