Women's Soccer Defeats Marist in Season Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's soccer team opened the 2001 season by defeating Marist College, 3-1, on Friday, August 31 at Glay Field.

Freshman midfielder Lauren Ritchie (Sayville, N.Y.) scored on a break-away in the third minute as the Friars took a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Friars increased their lead to 2-0 as freshman Kate Kearney (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored off assists from BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.) and Caitlyn Welsh (Winter Springs, Fla.) in the 54th minute. Less than two minutes later, Bruni also tallied her first collegiate goal as she beat her defender and fired a shot past Marist junior goalkeeper Meredith Fabian (Merrick, N.Y.).

The Red Foxes avoided the shutout when freshman Libby Ludwig (Commack, N.Y.) scored on a header in the 89th minute. The Friars outshot the Red Foxes 17-8. Marist goalkeepers Mellanie Nai (Suffield, Conn.) and Fabian combined to make six saves, while sophomore Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) halted five shots for the Friars. The Friars improved to 1-0, while the Red Foxes fell to 0-1.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, September 2 as they host the University of Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field. The Red Foxes travel to Holy Cross on Wednesday.
