Women's Soccer Opens 2004 Season With A 1-0 Victory Against Marist

ORONO, Maine - The Providence College women's soccer team kicked off the 2004 season with a 1-0 victory against Marist College on Friday, August 27 in Orono, Maine. Senior BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.) scored the Friars' lone goal at the 37:52 mark of the first half. Sophomore Leah Vieira (Rochester, N.Y.) was credited with the assist. Providence outshot Marist in the contest, 15-8, and held the advantage on corner kicks, 3-1. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) recorded the win and shutout in her collegiate debut. Elfers made five saves on the day. Marist goalkeeper Danielle Cibelli collected seven saves in the loss and allowed the Friars' only goal. Bruni moves into sole possession of 16th place on the all-time scoring list at Providence after notching her 11th career goal against the Red Foxes. Bruni now has 27 career points on 11 goals and five assists. PC's victory marks the first season-opening win since 2001 when the Friars defeated Marist 3-1. Providence also improves to 5-4 all-time in games played against Marist.
