Women's Soccer Opens Season With 1-1 Tie At Holy Cross

WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence College women's soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 1-1 tie against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. on Friday, August 25. Providence freshmen Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for PC to force overtime in the 54th minute, as she collected a loose ball in front of the goal cage and knocked it in for the score. Holy Cross gained a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute as Shelby Stand connected on a goal from 12-yards out in the center of the box. Kaitlin McTague and Casey Boland were each credited with an assist on the goal. After Benko's goal to tie the game, the two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 and were forced to play overtime. Providence outshot Holy Cross, 24-14, for the game, including a 7-4 advantage in shots in the two scoreless overtime sessions. The Friars also held the advantage on corner kicks, 10-4, including five corner opportunities in OT. Junior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) played all 110 minutes in net for PC and collected five saves. Holy Cross keeper Jessica Pietrowicz also played the entire game and registered seven saves. Providence (0-0-1) will return to action on Wednesday, August 30 against in-state rival Rhode Island at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played at Glay Field on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I.
