The Providence College women's soccer team improved its record to 1-1 on Sunday, August 19, after defeating Army in its home opener, 3-1. Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) led the way for the Friars, scoring two goals in the first half. Army's record drops to 1-1.
The Friars took a 3-0 lead into halftime. DiClemente tallied the first goal of the match for Providence in the 18th minute, when she finished Amanda Webster's (Saugus, Mass.) service to the back of the net. DiClemente's second goal came in the 35th minute off of Kerry Ann O'Connor's (New Rochelle, N.Y.) cross from the right side. The final goal of the half was recorded by freshman, Lauren Elia (Erie, Pa.). Elia's first goal as a Friar came in the 41st minute after netting a pass from teammate Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.).
The Black Knights battled back in the second half. They scored their only goal in the 56th minute of the match. Joey Molacek scored off of a free kick taken by teammate Molly McGuigan. McGuigan's free kick sailed to the front of the net and was deflected. Molacek collected the ball and found the back of the cage. The Friars were able to hold their two-goal lead until the final whistle. The Friars outshot the Black Knights, 16-8.
The Friars head on the road next weekend to play Holy Cross on Friday, August 24 and Quinnipiac on Sunday, August 26.
