Dec. 6, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team was awarded with three of Hockey East's four weekly awards. The Friars earned Team of the Week honors, freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) was named Rookie of the Week, and junior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) garnered the Defensive Player of the Week award. Player of the Week went to Vermont's Erin Wente. Buie and Lacasse were both instrumental in the team's two victories this weekend. On Saturday, December 4, the Friars defeated visiting New Hampshire, 4-2. Buie provided three assists, while Lacasse made 17 saves and contributed her fourth assist of the season. On Sunday, December 5, Providence upended UConn, 5-1. Buie scored the first Friar goal and chipped in an assist for her fifth point of the weekend. Lacasse made 27 stops to earn the victory in net. Her 13 wins is tied for the most in the nation with Cornell's Amanda Mazzotta. It is the second time this season the Friars have earned team of the week, and the second time Buie has earned rookie honors. It is the third time this season Lacasse has been recognized with defensive player acollades and the seventh time in her career. She was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for this past October. The Friars currently carry a 13-5-1 record and are off for the semester break. The team returns to action in Maine on January 2. Providence's next home is January 15, 2011 when it hosts New Hampshire for a 7 p.m. face-off.
