Nov. 17, 2008

Providence, R.I. - It was announced by the HOCKEY EAST Association that freshman goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) was named the HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week on Monday, November 17. Lacasse led the Friars to a 2-0 victory of Connecticut as she stopped all 30 shots on the PC cage on Sunday, November 16.

The shutout was the first by a PC freshman since Jana Bugden accomplished the feat on March 16, 2003. Lacasse has been a dominant presence in the Friar net the past three contests. The talented freshman has given up only three goals while stopping 82 shots in the three consecutive PC victories. Lacasse has been a major reason that Providence is unbeaten in the last five contests (4-0-1). On the season, she owns a 1.77 goals against average to go along with a stellar .944 save percentage. She stands at 5-3 in 2008.

This is the second week in a row that a Providence freshman was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week. Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) was given the award for the week of November 10.

Providence will welcome two CHA foes to Schneider Arena this coming weekend as they face-off against #10 Mercyhurst on Friday, November 21, before hosting Niagara on Saturday, November 22. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.
