COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Former Providence College women's hockey great Karen Thatcher '06 was named to the 23-player U.S. Women's National Team roster that will compete in the 2012 Women's Four Nations Cup in Vantaa and Kerava, Finland from Nov. 5-10 it was announced by USA Hockey.
"It is always an honor to represent your country and there is no greater thrill than to pull on a jersey emblazoned with the USA logo," Thatcher stated.
Thatcher was one of 12 former Olympians named to the 2012 Four Nations team and 2012 will mark her sixth Four Nations Cup.
Thatcher commented, "coming off a difficult past two seasons, the image of putting on that jersey again was what kept me going all summer during training days that sometimes hit 6 hours. To have that opportunity again could not mean more to me. I can't wait to get over to Finland with Team USA and defend our Four Nations title."
Prior to the start of the Four Nations Cup, the team will participate in a training camp at the New York Rangers' Madison Square Garden Training Facility in Tarrytown, N.Y., from Oct. 30 - Nov. 4. Team USA opens Four Nations Cup play on Nov. 6 against Sweden at 4 p.m. local time at the Tikkurila Valtti Arena in Vantaa, Finland. National Team head coach Katy Stone will use the tournament to continue player evaluations with an eye toward the 2014 Olympic Games.
Thatcher was a standout forward for the Friars women's ice hockey team ranking 10th on the all-time scoring list with 167 points in 132 games. After transferring from Brown following her freshman season, she helped lead the Friars to the Hockey East Championship both in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, she was Hockey East Co-Player of the Year and a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award. During her senior season (2006) she captained the team and was named Second Team All-American. Thatcher also earned All-Academic honors and Hockey East Sportsmanship awards all three seasons with the Friars (2003-2006).
After graduating from Providence, Thatcher participated in five, Four Nations Cups from 2006 to 2011 with the U.S. Women's Hockey National Team. Thatcher was also a member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team that won silver in Vancouver. During the 2010 Olympic games she tallied six points (3 goals and 3 assists) in five games for the U.S. and finished fourth on the team with a plus/ minus of plus eight. She then returned to her alma mater Providence College to become the assistant coach for the women's ice hockey team for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, helping guide the team to the Hockey East Tournament both seasons.
