PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Providence College women's ice hockey freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) has been named Hockey East's Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week for games held the weekend of October 1 through October 3. It is the first weekly honor for a Friar Hockey player in the young , 2010-2011 season.
Buie scored three goals in her first two collegiate games. In the Friars' season-opening, 5-4 loss at Robert Morris Friday, she converted a power play goal late in the third period, digging the puck out of a scrum in front and backhanding it into the net.
Buie played a key role in the Friars' 5-2 victory over the Colonials on Saturday. She scored midway through the third to give the Friars a 4-1 lead.
After RMU cut the lead to 4-2, Buie provided more insurance. With the Colonial net empty and less than 30 seconds left to play, the freshman collected a clearing pass from Friar goaltender Genevieve Lacasse and skated into the offensive zone. Buie was knocked to her knees by a diving RMU defensman, maintained possession and guided the puck into the open net.
The Friars' first regular season home game is Saturday, October 9, when St. Lawrence comes to town (2 p.m. face-off). The team then welcomes Clarkson to Schneider Arena on Sunday, October 10, (2 p.m. start). Tickets are available by calling the Providence College ticket office at 401-865-GOPC.
