Sept. 21, 2011
CALGARY, ALBERTA - Providence College senior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) is taking part in Hockey Canada's September Training Camp and Fall Festival. The nine-day event, being held at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary, includes Canada's top 40 female players, according to Hockey Canada.
Lacasse is one of four goalies participating in the program that will feature several practices, exhibitions and two intrasquad games, the first of which faces-off today, September 21.
The camp is serving as an evaluation as Hockey Canada begins to put together its roster for the season's international competitions, including the 2012 World Championships in Burlington, Vt. this coming April.
The invitation is the latest in a series of international accomplishments for Lacasse. Last month, she played three games for Team Canada at the IIHF's 12 Nations Tournament, including a shutout win over Slovakia and a victory over the defending World Champion United States that ended in a shootout.
In January, Lacasse led the Canadian Under-22 National Team to the gold medal in the MLP Cup, stopping every shot she faced while earning three victories in net.
Lacasse is already one of the most prolific goaltenders in Friar history. During the last collegiate campaign, she became the Providence College record holder in career saves (2,582) and saves in a season (948). She also broke the Hockey East mark for saves in a tournament contest, halting 58 shots in the semifinal, overtime loss to eventual champion, Boston College.
Providence College begins its 2011-12 season this Saturday, September 24, hosting Canadian power McGill for an exhibition at Schneider Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
