Women's Hockey Alumnae Karen Thatcher and Mari Pehkonen Compete In 2009 Hockey Canada Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Former Friar women's hockey stars Mari Pehkonen `09 and Karen Thatcher `06 finished competition at the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup held in Vancouver, B.C. Thatcher helped lead Team USA to the gold medal, while Pehkonen was part of Team Finland who took home bronze. The Hockey Canada Cup is a pre-Olympic tournament in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Games being held in Vancouver, B.C. from February 12-February 28.

Thatcher and Team USA edged out Canada, 2-1, in the final. USA and Thatcher have now beaten Canada in the last four major competitions including the 2008 and 2009 World Championships.

Thatcher finished the tournament with one goal coming against Sweden. Both Pehkonen and Thatcher are hoping to be selected to the final rosters which will compete in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. Team USA will cut its roster from 23 down to 21 players in mid-December. Thatcher is looking to play in her first Olympics, while Pehkonen is hoping to take part in her second Olympic Games.
