PROVIDENCE, RI -
The Providence College women's ice hockey players will host the first annual Road Hockey Rumble, Sunday, September 12, from 1 - 3 p.m. at the college's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The street hockey tournament is open to the entire Providence College community and will raise money for Children's Charities of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The event was inspired by the Friar Field Hockey Friendzy, an annual fundraiser organized by the Providence College Field Hockey program. The Friendzy welcomes students, faculty and staff to play in a field hockey tournament. The Friendzy's goal, in addition to raising money for worthy causes, is to share the game of field hockey with those who may be unfamiliar.
"I know the Field Hockey Friendzy is a lot of fun to take part in," said Friar senior ice hockey defenseman Christie Jensen, who has led the Road Hockey organizing effort along with her teammates. "We looked around and realized we could do the same for road hockey."
Similar to the field hockey tournament, the Road Hockey Rumble will feature 16 teams. Each team will be captained by a member of the Friar women's ice hockey team and a $10 donation is required to play. Sticks will be provided.
"I think it's important for the students to see athletes giving back," says Jensen. "This will be an opportunity for them to get to know us. The better they know us, the more they'll support us when our season begins."
