The Providence College women's ice hockey team announced today, Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 the addition of two more players to round out a 24-person roster for the 2013-14 season. The Friars will add Ariana Buxman to the class of 2017 and Janine Weber to the class of 2014.
Buxman will join the Friars as a 5'6'' right shot defensemen from Glenwood Springs, Colo. Buxman spent the 2012-13 season with the Shattuck-St.Mary's School. She finished the season with seven points on seven assists in 40 games. Buxman helped lead the Sabres to the semifinal game at the USA Hockey U19 National Championships this past April.
"Ariana is a wonderful addition to our Friar hockey family - as a person, student and hockey player," Assistant Coach Meredith Roth shared on the new addition. "On the ice, Ariana will bring the type of competitive drive we need to be successful in Hockey East. Ari's hockey sense, decision-making with and without the puck and skating ability will be a very good addition to our defensive core. We couldn't be more excited have her and her family join our program."
Weber will join the team as a fifth year graduate student from Innsbruck, Austria. The 5'6'' forward played in the EWHL with the Vienna Sabres. Weber ranked third on the team in scoring and fifth in the league with 43 points on 23 goals and 20 assists in 21 games played during the 2012-13 season. Weber led all players in the EWHL Supercup with 15 points on eight goals and seven assists in five games. She was named to the EWHL All-Star Team in 2011 and 2012. Weber has also been a member of the Austrian National Team since 2008, playing in four World Championships (2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013) and in the 2008 U18 World Championships. While with the National Team, Weber has collected 86 points on 57 goals and 29 assists.
"Janine is a skilled forward with great presence on the ice and has the ability to put the puck in the net," Assistant Coach Melanie Ruzzi
commented. "I believe her passion for the game and the way in which she carries herself will allow her to make an immediate impact in our locker room."
Providence will host McGill on Saturday, Sept. 28 for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop at Schneider Arena for an exhibition match-up before heading into its regular season schedule.
