EAST HARTFORD, CONN. - It was announced today (June 2), that the Providence College women's ice hockey team will participate in the "Whalers Hockey Fest" on Sunday, February 13 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. The Friars will take on the University of Connecticut in a HOCKEY EAST match-up. Also on that day, the UConn men's ice hockey team will face Sacred Heart in an Atlantic Hockey contest. Game times will be announced at a later date.
The outdoor doubleheader is part of a 10-day Whalers Hockey Fest that could include more than 20 outdoor games between professional, college, prep school and high school teams at Rentschler Field. The event is being sponsored by Whalers Sports and Entertainment.
"We are very excited to participate in such a unique event," Providence Head Coach Bob Deraney said. "Not only does it showcase the sport of women's ice hockey, but it also features two formidable HOCKEY EAST teams that have developed a fierce rivalry with one another. Every team wants to play in an outdoor event like this and we are grateful to have this opportunity for our student-athletes, staff and fans. We would like to thank Whalers Sports and Entertainment and especially the University of Connecticut for including us."
Rentschler Field is a 40,000-seat stadium, owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by Bushnell Management Services. It also serves as home field to the UConn football program.
The Providence College women's ice hockey program finished the 2009-10 season with a 15-11-9 overall record and won its third HOCKEY EAST regular-season championship with an 11-5-5 mark in conference action. The Friars completed the season ranked 10th in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
