PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College women’s hockey forward Christina Putigna has been selected to the Hockey Canada’s National Women’s Program strength and conditioning camp. Putigna is one of 47 candidates for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team.

“We are very excited that Christina has been identified as a top prospect by Team Canada and wish her good luck,” said Head Coach Bob Deraney. “Without question, based on her play during the entire season and especially her improvement over the second half of the season showed Christina has the potential to excel not only at our level but at the next level as well.”

Putigna has been selected to the training camp after playing her first season at Providence in 2015-16. Putigna finished second among her teammates in points, with 28. The freshman forward scored 11 goals and tallied 17 assists. Putigna tallied eight power-play goals, which ranked fourth in the NCAA and second in Hockey East.

Putigna recorded six multi-point games, and enjoyed an eight-game point streak. She was named Hockey East Rookie of the Month for November, Rookie of the Week twice (Nov. 23 and Nov. 30), and Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Putigna finished third among Hockey East freshmen in scoring (7-11-18).

By virtue of her selection for the strength and conditioning camp, Putigna is in contention for the Canadian teams that will compete in a three-game series against the United States this summer in Calgary. She is also eligible to compete at the 2017 Nations Cup and with Canada’s National Women’s Team.

“Christina deserves all the credit,” said Deraney.  “She put herself in this position, and I’m sure she will take full advantage and make the most of the well-earned opportunity.”
