PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey players Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska) and Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) have been recognized by the American Women's Hockey Coaches Association as National Academic Scholars.

To earn the honor, student athletes must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better over two semesters, have dressed for 75% of the team's games and be a member in good standing with their team and school.

Vella, a junior health policy management major, received the team's academic award in 2011 and is a two-time Hockey East All-Academic selection. This past season, she played in all 37 games while tallying a career-best 18 points on nine goals and nine assists. She tied for the team lead with three power play strikes, and also contributed a short-handed score while helping the Friars reach their sixth Hockey East Championship in the last ten campaigns.

Cohen, a junior with a double major in global studies and philosophy, has also twice received Hockey East All-Academic status. This season, she excelled while switching from her natural forward position to defense after the team endured injuries to its blue line corps. She played in all 37 games, accumulating a plus-minus rating of +11 to go with nine points on three goals and six assists.

The Friars will celebrate the 2011-12 campaign with two events next weekend.
