Women's Hockey Announces 2003 Team Awards
The Providence College women's ice hockey team announced its annual team awards on Sunday, April 13 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, R.I. at the team's 2003 Award Banquet.
Senior captain, Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) received the Captain's Award and the team Academic Award. The Captain's Award is presented to the team captain and symbolizes her leadership and commitment to the team. Butsch, who posted a 3.63 GPA as a social science major, was the recipient of the team Academic Award, which is presented to the player with the highest cumulative grade point average from the 2002 spring semester through the fall of the current academic year. Butsch played in all 36 games and posted 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points. She registered her first career hat-trick this season and became the 23rd woman in the program's history to score over 100 points in her collegiate career. Senior assistant captain, Melaine Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.) was the recipient of the Coaches' Award. The award is given annually by the coaching staff to the player who excelled beyond expectations at her position. Ruzzi played in all 36 games this season for the Friars and recorded three goals and 12 assists for 15 points. Over her career she played in more games (141) than any other player in the program's history. Junior defenseman Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) was voted the team's Most Valuable Player by her teammates. She tallied 14 goals and 31 assists for a total of 45 points, which led both the team and HOCKEY EAST. Halcisak became the 24th player to score over 100 points in her career and the first defenseman in the program's history to be named an All-American. Junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) earned the team's Unsung Hero Award as the player who consistently contributed to the team and its success, but did not receive the recognition she deserved. Stephenson finished fifth on the team in scoring with 18 goals and 12 assists for 30 points and received the HOCKEY EAST Sportsmanship Award. Sophomore forward Christina Redmond (Dorchester, Mass.) received the Most Improved Player Award as the player that showed the greatest improvement over the course of the season due to her hard work and dedication to the team. She played in 32 of the team's 36 games and tallied three goals. Freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) was voted the team's Seventh Player as the player who performed above and beyond expectations. She played in 31 of the team's 36 games and received nine weekly HOCKEY EAST awards as well as being named Rookie of the Month for October and Goaltender of the Month for December. Bugden finished the season with a 20-5-5 record, a 1.69 goals against average, a .925 save percentage and seven shutouts. The Friars finished the season with a 24-6-6 overall record and 13-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST. Providence captured the inaugural HOCKEY EAST regular season and tournament titles.
