Friars Sweep HOCKEY EAST Weekly Awards
March 23, 2004 The Providence College women's ice hockey team swept the HOCKEY EAST weekly awards after a strong performance in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament this past weekend. Senior defender Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) was named Player of the Week, while sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) was named HOCKEY EAST Defensive Player of the Week and freshman forward Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week on March 22, 2004. Halcisak scored a goal in each game of the tournament, including the game winner on Sunday, March 21 in the Friars', 3-0, victory over New Hampshire. She also finished the Tournament with a plus/minus rating of plus five. Bugden earned the honor for her strong play between the pipes as the Friars repeated as HOCKEY EAST champions with a 4-2 win over Maine on Saturday, March 20 and a 3-0 shutout over New Hampshire on Sunday, March 21. The two goals scored by the Black Bears were the first two goals allowed by Bugden and the Friars in their HOCKEY EAST Tournament history. Bugden made 24 saves in the Championship game to shutout New Hampshire for the second year in a row in the final. Watrous, the HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Year, tallied the game-winning goal in the Friars', 4-2, semifinal round victory over Maine and finished the weekend with a plus/minus rating of plus three.
Providence College finished the season with a 21-13-2 overall record and a 14-5-1 record in HOCKEY EAST .
