PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women’s hockey and women's basketball programs hosted their annual Skating Strides and Pink Out Friartown events to raise money for breast cancer awareness this month.
The women’s hockey team’s Skating Strides event took place on Sunday, February 16 when the Friars hosted Boston University. The team sold pink skates that were hung on the press box at the game. Through skate, Chuck a Puck and merchandise sales the team raised $4,052.44 for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
Prior to the game Joe Gemma, President of the Board of Directors of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, along with his daughter Nicola participated in a ceremonial puck drop and a check presentation.
The women’s basketball team’s Pink Out Friartown event was held on Saturday, February 22 when the Friars defeated BIG EAST newcomer Xavier University. Pink Out Friartown t-shirts donated by United Health Care were sold. All proceeds from shirt sales and donations collected at the game will support the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. For the first time a Faculty/Staff challenge, fitness classes and a health fair were offered as part of the event. The winning department who raised the most funds was the Student Affairs office. A total of $3,196 has been raised to date.
During the game cancer survivors participated in timeout contests, were recognized as an honorary coach, and were part of the check presentation at halftime. Also at halftime, student athletes from other Friar Athletic teams participated in a push-up challenge. The winning team was softball. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee members collected pledges based on the number of push-ups each could do. Funds from the Challenge are still being collected.
All proceeds from the two games will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
The women’s basketball team wore custom uniforms with pink trim and pink shoes during the game vs. Xavier. While the women’s hockey team wore custom warm up sweaters prior to the game.
The custom uniforms from women’s basketball are available in the online auction. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The opening bid for each pink uniform will begin at $100 or can be purchased on the spot with the "Buy It Now" option for $300. The auction will conclude on Wednesday, March 5 at 10:00 a.m. For a direct link to the auction site, please click HERE.
Rhode Island Medical Imaging (RIMI), who was the official sponsor of the Pink Out Friartown uniforms being worn by the players. In its second year, RIMI's generous donation has allowed the Providence College Women's Basketball program to purchase the uniforms to help support a great cause.
A long-time supporter of the Providence College Friars, UnitedHealthcare stepped up its collaboration by joining in the women's basketball team's annual Pink Out game on February 22, 2014. By teaming up with the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, the young women from the basketball and hockey teams are making a difference now so their futures - and those of their friends, families and fans - may be free from breast cancer. UnitedHealthcare's mission is to help people live healthier lives by not only providing access to health care coverage and tools that help people achieve their health goals, but to support initiatives like the Friars' Pink Out events to raise awareness of breast cancer and funds needed to help find a cure.
