WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Providence College women's ice hockey freshman Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team on Wednesday, March 6. Illikainen was one of three unanimous selections. The last Friars to be named to the All-Rookie team are juniors Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) and Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) for their play during the 2010-11 season.

Illikainen has been a steady force for the Friar offense, notching 30 points on 12 goals and 18 assists in 34 games this season. Her 30 points rank her third on the team for scoring, while her 18 assists ranks her tied for second. In 20 league games, Illikainen notched 19 points to help the Friars to the Hockey East semifinal round.

Illikainen notched two game-winning goals during the regular season and tallied a goal during the Friars 5-4 overtime comeback win in the Hockey East quarterfinal round.

January proved to be Illikainen's standout month. She earned Rookie of the Month honors with a team high 11 points on four goals and seven assists. The rookie forward tallied two four-point games during the month, one against then tenth-ranked Northeastern on Sunday, Jan. 20 and the other against Maine on Sunday, Jan. 27. Illikainen tallied three power-play goals and finished the month with a plus/minus rating of plus seven. Illikainen notched at least one point in five of the Friars six games to average 1.83 points per game during January.

Illikainen's 30 points rank her third in the league and 11th in the nation for rookie scoring. She is the first Friar freshman to tally 18 or more assists since the 2000-01 season when Darlene Stephenson '04 notched 19 during her freshman campaign.
