Women's Hockey Players Laura Veharanta and Genevieve Lacasse Earn Weekly Hockey East Honors

March 2, 2009

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced by the Hockey East Association that freshman forward Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week and classmate Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont.) was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, March 2. Veharanta helped lead the Friars into the 2009 Hockey East Semifinals with the game-winning goal and an assist in PC's 3-0 victory over Connecticut on Saturday. Lacasse was impressive in net as she stopped all 18 shots she faced to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

This is Veharanta's second ROW award as she earned the honor on November 10. Veharanta has been stationed atop the Friar stat sheet since the start of the season. Coming into the Hockey East Semifinals, she leads Providence with 16 goals, 31 points, eight power-play goals, and is tied for first with four game-winning tallies.

Lacasse earns her first Defensive Player of the Week honor after being named Rookie of the Week on three seperate occassions (11/17, 1/12, 1/26). The freshman netminder has been sensational this season, especially against Connecticut. In the four contests against the Huskies, Lacasse gave up a mere three goals while stopping 116 shots on the way to earning two shutouts and a 3-1 record. On the season, she boasts a record of 15-10-1 (11-5-0 HE) to go along with a 1.90 gaa and a .935 sv%.

The Friars return to action as they travel to New Hampshire for the 2009 Hockey East Semifinals on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Providence will face off against the top-seeded Wildcats in hope of reaching the Hockey East Championship for the sixth time since the inception of Women's Hockey East in 2003.
