The top-seeded Providence College women's ice hockey team will face off against the No. 5 seed Connecticut in the first game of the Hockey East semifinals on Saturday, March 6 at 12:00 p.m. The Friars won the regular season championship and earned the right to host the Hockey East Tournament. The other semifinal pits No. 2 UNH against No. 3 Boston University at 3:00 p.m. The winners will face off in the Hockey East Championship at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 7.
The semifinals will be broadcast live over the internet through B2 Networks at http://www.b2livetv.com/upcoming_events.asp?q=s&value=womenshockey. Games will be sold on an individual basis for $8 (US). Fans can own a personal copy of each game by going to www.b2tv.com and downloading the event from B2onDemand for a price of just $19.95 per game. Fans can find the link on the women's hockey home page of Friars.com. The New England Sports Network (NESN) will air the WHEA Championship Game on Sunday, March 7 on tape delay at 6 p.m.
Providence will face off against UConn in the opening game. Providence comes into the game ranked No. 10 in the nation with UConn ranked No. 7/8. PC lost the season series with the Huskies (0-1-2). The Friars and Huskies have faced off in four of the seven Hockey East Tournaments, with PC ending UConn's season in all four occasions.
Providence has reached the Hockey East Championship game in five of the seven years since the inaugural Hockey East season in 2002-03. The Friars won the first three Hockey East Championships (2003, 2004, 2005) with UNH claiming the last four league tournament titles (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009).
Tickets for the 2010 Women's Hockey East Championship are on sale now. Tickets may be purchased through the Providence College Athletic Ticket Office by calling (401) 865-GOPC (4672) or by logging on to www.friars.com. Tickets prices are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors, youths and groups of 10 or more. Students from Hockey East schools are eligible for a complimentary ticket, with a valid student ID, at the Schneider Arena box office on game day.
