Kathleen McHugh Earns Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week

Feb. 20, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College women’s ice hockey team’s freshman forward, Kathleen McHugh (Billerica, Mass.) was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week in announcement made by the league on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017.

The Rookie of the Week nod for McHugh is her first weekly honor from the league. The nod serves as Providence’s fourth rookie to claim the honor. Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.), Avery Fransoo (North Battleford, Saskatchewan), and Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) have each earned the weekly honor earlier in the season.

McHugh was recognized after her three-point game against then-No. 6 Boston College. McHugh’s effort helped the Friars to upset the Eagles at Schneider Arena, 4-1, on Feb. 18. The win also ensured home-ice for the Hockey East quarterfinals.

McHugh started the game with an assist in the first 54 seconds and followed up with two goals. McHugh’s first goal of the game served as the eventual game-winner.

The Friars resume play with the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Feb. 24 at 5:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena, hosting the number five seed Vermont. The teams will play a best-of-three series to advance to the Hockey East Championship Weekend.
