PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey assistant coach Karen Thatcher '06 has been named to the preliminary World Championship roster by USA Hockey.

Thatcher is one of 27 players invited to USA Hockey's pre-World Championship training camp in late March in Lake Placid, N.Y.

After the camp, the roster will be trimmed to the 21 players who will represent the United States at the 2012 World Championships, to be held April 7-14 in Burlington, Vermont.

It is the latest addition in a long resume of international achievement for Thatcher, who has played in five Four Nations' tournaments, three World Championships and one Olympic Games. Most recently, she helped Team USA claim gold at the 2011 Four Nation's Cup in November. She was also part of the U.S. squad that earned silver at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, recording three goals and three assists for six points. Prior to the Olympics, she helped the U.S. win back-to-back gold at the 2008 and 2009 World Championships.

Thatcher and the Friars will celebrate Senior Day on Friday, February 17. Providence will honor the seven members of the class of 2012 prior to its 7 p.m. face-off with #7 Northeastern. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GO PC or by visiting Friars.com.
