Feb. 14, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I - Providence College women's ice hockey goalie Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) has been named Hockey East's Defensive Player of the Week for games played on February 12 and 13.

The junior backstopped the ninth-ranked Friars to a 2-1, overtime victory over Connecticut on Saturday, halting 30 shots. On Sunday, Lacasse and the Friars stepped outdoors to play at Connecticut's Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The game, played under the lights on a specially constructed rink for the Whalers Hockey Fest celebration, saw Providence beat UConn, 4-3. Lacasse stopped 20 shots in the process.

It is the eighth time in the netminder's career she has garnered conference Defensive Player of the Week. This season alone, she has won either Defensive or co-Defensive acknowledgment four times, plus two Goaltender of the Month awards and one outright Player of the Week honor.

Statistically this season, Lacasse sports a save percentage of .940 that ranks first in the Hockey East and sixth in the nation. She has a goals against average of 1.85. Providence returns to action this Saturday, February 19 when it hosts Vermont at Schneider Arena. The teams will meet again on Sunday at Schneider, with the Friars honoring the class of 2011 for Senior Day. Both games face-off at 1 p.m. and tickets are available by calling the Providence College ticket office at (401) 865 GOPC.
