Women's Ice Hockey Preview
Feb. 13, 2003 #9 Providence College Friars (17-6-6): The Providence College women's ice hockey team travels to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac on Friday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m., then hosts the Bobcats on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. Providence is coming off its first victory against Brown since January 23, 1998. The Friars defeated the Bears, 4-3, on Wednesday, February 12 as junior forward Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period. The other Friar goals came from senior forward Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore forward Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.). Zimmerman is now tied with senior forward Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) for the team lead in points with 29. Zimmerman leads the team in goals (17), while junior defenseman Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) has the team lead in assists (19). Freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 33 saves against Brown and improved her record to 15-5-5 on the season. She now has a goals against average of 1.76 and a .922 save percentage. In four all-time meetings with Quinnipiac, Providence owns a 4-0-0 record. The two teams met on November 30, 2002 of this season with the Friars defeating the Bobcats, 7-1. Quinnipiac University (5-20-0): The Bobcats host ninth-ranked Providence, then travel to Providence, R.I. to face the Friars. The Bobcats will be looking to rebound from a 9-1 loss against Maine on Saturday, February 8. Quinnipiac sophomore forward Caitlin Peters (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored the Bobcats' lone goal. Both senior Mel Courtemanche (Greenville, R.I.) and sophomore Catherine Laparé (Valley Field, Quebec) split time in goal for Quinnipiac against Maine. Courtemanche made 11 saves and was given the loss which dropped her record season record to 2-17-0. She now has a 4.21 goals against average and a .888 save percentage. For the year, sophomore forward Gillian Gallagher (Boonton, N.J.) is leading the team in goals (8) and points (16), while Peters is leading the Bobcats in assists (9).
