Women's Hockey Alumna Karen Thatcher Competes With U.S. Olympic Team

Feb. 12, 2010

Former Friar women's hockey star Karen Thatcher (`06) will be competing with Team USA in the 2010 Winter Olympics beginning on Sunday, February 14 against China. The game will be televised on USA Network at 3:00 p.m. (ET).

USA is looking for its second gold medal after seven former Friars helped win the inaugural gold medal in women's hockey at the 1998 Olympics held in Nagano, Japan. USA won silver in the 2002 Olympic Games before earning a bronze medal in the 2006 Olympic Games. USA will compete in Group B with Finland, China and Russia. Group A consists of two-time defending gold medalists Canada along with Sweden, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Thatcher becomes the seventh Friar to compete for Team USA, joining Chris Bailey (`94), Laurie Baker (`97), Alana Blahoski (`96), Sara DeCosta (`00), Cammi Granato (`93), Lisa Brown-Miller (`88) and Vicki Movsessian (`94). Mari Pehkonen (`09) represented Finland in the 2006 Olympics.

While at Providence, Thatcher finished her record-breaking career with 167 points in 132 games and had a hand in PC's Hockey East Tournament titles in 2004 and 2005. She helped lead PC to its only NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005. Thatcher ranks 10th in career points at Providence. A top-10 Patty Kazmaier Finalist, Thatcher led the team in scoring for the second-straight time in 2005 with 47 points. She earned the Hockey East Sportsmanship award three-consecutive seasons as well as All-Academic honors. Thatcher was named a Second-Team All American, a Hockey East All-Star, New England Hockey Writers All-Star and Providence College Athlete of the Year in her final season with the Friars.
