Feb. 10, 2007

Boston, Mass. - The Friars cut BU's lead to 2-1 after the second period of play, but could not get any closer as the Terriers held on for the 3-1 victory. The Friars outshot the Terriers 37-26. Providence now stands at 13-12-4, and 10-3-3 in HOCKEY EAST play while BU improves to 17-9-3 and 8-7-2 in HOCKEY EAST play.

Providence had the majority of the first period's scoring opportunities, out shooting BU 14-5, but it was BU who got on the scoreboard first when Nicki Wiart was able to net a power-play goal for the Terriers, with an assist from Sarah Russell, at the 9:52 mark. BU jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Gina Kearns took a shot that deflected off of a Providence player and PC past goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) at 17:24. Jonnie Bloemers was credited with assists on the goal.

Senior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) tipped in classmate Kristin Gigliotti's (Saquoit, N.Y.) shot from the point at 14:39 of the second period to score the Friars' first goal, and bring them within one of BU. The goal, which came on the power-paly, was also assited by sophomore Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ont.).

In the third period Providence gained some momentum as they killed off a five-on-three BU power-play that lasted 1:40, but the Friars could not beat BU goaltender Allyse Wilcox for the equalizer. BU added an empty-net goal with four seconds left in the game, scored by Jenn Kearns. In net, Bugden finished the game with 23 saves for the Friars, while Wilcox added 36 for the Terriers.

The Friars return to action tomorrow, February 11, as they renew the oldest rivalry in women' s collegiate hockey when they host the Wildcats of New Hampshire at Schneider Arena. The game, taking place at 2:00 p.m., can be seen on Cox Sports TV at 7:00 p.m.
