Women's Hockey to Play Brown in Mayor's Cup

MAYOR'S CUP... Wednesday's game will mark the fourth time Providence and Brown have played in the Mayor's Cup. Brown leads the Mayor's Cup series, 2-1. Last year, PC captured its first Mayor's Cup with a 2-0 win at PC.

PROVIDENCE VS. BROWN SERIES... Providence College has recorded an all-time mark of 26-12 against Brown. In the only meeting between the two teams this season, Brown defeated the Friars, 2-1, on Dec. 9 at Schneider Arena.

ROSEN LEADS PC IN SCORING... Sophomore forward Corinne Rosen of Milwaukee, Wis. leads the team in scoring (31 points) and goals (15). Last season, she tallied 11 goals and 11 assists in 32 games.

DeCOSTA IN NET... Sophomore goaltender Sara DeCosta of Warwick, Rhode Island is one of the top netminders in the nation. After earning ECAC Honorable Mention Honors as a freshman in 1996-97, DeCosta took a break from her studies last year to help the U.S. Olympic Team capture the gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games. At the Olympics, she posted a 3-0 mark, a 1.59 goals against average and a 1.59 save percentage. This season, DeCosta has been named ECAC Goalie of the Week three times. She has recorded a 12-4-2 record, three shutouts, a 2.00 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. She is one of 10 candidates for the 1999 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which is presented annually to the top women's ice hockey player in the nation.

TABB BOOSTS OFFENSE... Sophomore Jessica Tabb of Springfield, Mass., is one of the Friars' top offensive threats. Last season, she earned ECAC Rookie of the Year honors after registering 22 goals and 17 assists in 32 games. This season, she is third on the team in scoring with 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) in 23 games.

PC AND ECAC ACCOMPLISHMENTS... Since the ECAC Women's Hockey League was founded in the 1983-84, PC has won six league titles (1984, 1985, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995). PC has had 28 players named ECAC Division I All-Stars, eight players were ECAC Division I Player of the Year and five earned ECAC Division I Rookie of the Year honors.

LAST SEASON... PC finished last season in sixth place in the ECAC with a 9-11-2 mark and a 9-21-2 overall record. For the Friars it marked the 15th season the team reached the ECAC Tournament. In the Tournament, the Friars were eliminated from the Quarterfinals by Dartmouth College, 6-4.

HEAD COACH TOM SHEEHAN... Interim Head Coach Tom Sheehan took over the team after Christmas and has posted a 10-3 mark in 13 games. Sheehan took over the Friars after fifth-year Head Coach Jackie Barto resigned to take over the women's hockey program at Ohio State. Sheehan is a 1972 graduate of Providence College. He played hockey for four seasons at Providence under legendary Friar Head Coach Lou Lamoriello. Sheehan's son, Tom, played hockey at PC and graduated in 1997. Sheehan began his coaching career at LaSalle Academy (Providence). He coached the boys' hockey team for 10 years at LaSalle (1986-96). Sheehan is assisted by Bob Bellemore.
