WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Providence College women's ice hockey senior forward Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) and freshman goaltender Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) received weekly league honors for their play over the weekend on Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2. Vella was named Athletic Republic Player of the Week, while Bryant was named Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.
Vella led the Friars in a weekend home-and-home series sweep over Connecticut. The senior forward tallied a three goal weekend notching at least one point in both games the Friars play. On Friday, Feb. 1, Vella tallied a goal in the Friars 5-0 win in Storrs, Conn. On Saturday, Feb. 2, Vella notched two goals, including the overtime game-winner in the Friars 4-3 win over the Huskies. Vella has notched a career best 22 points on 13 goals and seven assists for the Friars thus far on the season. The last Friar to be named Player of the Week was sophomore Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) for her play earlier in the season on Nov. 26, 2012.
Bryant was named Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week for helping the Friars in both wins over the weekend. On Friday, Feb. 1, Bryant earned her second career shutout and first road shutout with 19 saves in the Friars 5-0 win over the Huskies. On Saturday, Feb. 2, Bryant made 32 saves, including three in overtime, in the Friars 4-3 overtime victory to earn her 10th win on the season. The Friars were also named Team of the Week for their weekend sweep over Connecticut. Providence earned its 300th win in Schneider Arena on Saturday, Feb. 2 with its 4-3 overtime win against the Huskies.
