Jan. 30, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) has been named Defensive Player of the Week by Hockey East. It is the ninth time she has earned the honor.

It was a weekend to remember for the senior. With two victories over UConn, she tied and then surpassed the Providence College women's record for career victories by a goaltender. She now has 59, one better than the previous mark held by former Friar great Jana Bugden '07 (Corner Brook, New Foundland ).

On Saturday, Lacasse and the Friars blanked the Huskies, 2-0. The goalie halted 19 shots for her 17th career shutout - also a Friar record. Sunday, she made 32 saves in leading PC to a 5-2 decision.

Lacasse now holds every major goaltending record for the program, including career victories (59), career games-played (119), career saves (3,211), saves in a season (948) and shutouts (17). She also holds the Hockey East mark for saves in a tournament game (58).

The Defensive Player of the Week award is the second honor Lacasse has received this week. Prior to Saturday's game, she joined 12 other Friar greats on the Providence Tenth Anniversary Team, a group that distinguished themselves on and off the ice during the first ten seasons of the Women's Hockey East Association.

The Friars return to action this Saturday, February 4, with a visit to #4 Boston College. Face-off at Conte Forum is scheduled for 2 p.m. The next PC home game is Friday, February 17 against #7 Northeastern. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. Before the contest, the Friars will salute the class of 2012 with the Senior Day Ceremony. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GO PC or by visiting Friars.com.
