Providence College women's ice hockey freshman forward Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Illikainen led the Friars in scoring in the month of January with 11 points on four goals and seven assists.
Illikainen tallied two four-point games during the month of January, the first against then tenth ranked Northeastern on Sunday, Jan. 20 and against Maine on Sunday, Jan. 27. The rookie forward averaged 1.83 points per game during January and was on the score sheet for five of the six games the Friars played. Illikainen notched three power-play goals and finished the month with a plus minus rating of plus seven.
Illikainen currently ranks second on the team in scoring with 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists. Her 25 points ranks third in Hockey East,11th in the nation for freshman scoring and 13th for overall point scoring. Illikainen has notched four power-play goals and two game-winning goals on the season.
Tha last Friar to earn Rookie of the Month honors from the league was junior Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) for her play during the month of February in 2011. Illikainen is the first Friar to be recognized with monthly honors from the league this season.
Illikainen and the Friars are back in action this Friday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7:00 p.m. when the Friars take on Connecticut in a home-and-home series. The Friars will travel to Storrs, Conn. on Friday before taking on the Huskies at Schneider Arena on Saturday.
