Former Associate Athletic Director Helen Bert Honored By AHCA With Women's Ice Hockey Founders Award

Jan. 29, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Officers and Governors of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) have announced its major award winners for 2010. Former Providence College Associate Athletic Director Helen Bert has been honored with the Women's Ice Hockey Founders Award. Helen Bert was the pioneer of female athletics at Providence College. In 1971, she was appointed as the first woman in the PC athletics department as she became the Coordinator of Women's Athletics and was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director, later emerging as Associate Athletic Director under Lou Lamoriello. Bert helped establish 12 Division I varsity women's sports at Providence College and was recognized nationally for her programs. On February 24, 1984 Bert became the first woman inductee of the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame. She also was inducted into the North Providence Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 1996.

She was instrumental in starting the women's ice hockey program at Providence College and the formation of the first women's college hockey league in the ECAC.

In nominating Bert for this honor, current Providence College head coach Bob Deraney said, "It is safe to say that what we see today and the opportunities offered to women's ice hockey players with four leagues, an NCAA Championship, various world championships and the Olympics are a direct result of those pioneers back in the 1970's. Helen was one of those pioneers, if not the main person leading that crusade. Without her tireless and relentless effort to advance our sport, where would it be today? Because of the wonderful women's spirit and countless contributions to our sport, I feel there is no other more deserving recipient for the first ever Women's Ice Hockey Founders Award than Helen Bert."

The Women's Founders Award will be presented at the AHCA Celebration of Women's Hockey in Naples, FL, on Friday evening, April 30.

The Friars will host the University of Vermont for a Hockey East contest at 7:00 p.m. in Schneider Arena on Friday, January 29. The game will be televised on Cox Sports TV in Rhode Island. For ticket information, please visit or call 401-865-GOPC.
