Women’s Hockey Defeats UNH in Inaugural #ReliveTheRivalry Challenge

Jan. 22, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s hockey program defeated the University of New Hampshire women’s hockey program in the schools’ inaugural Relive the Rivalry challenge.

The fundraising campaign sought to capitalize on the storied rivalry and longtime comradery between the two programs. The concept of the alumni giving challenge was conceived as a way to recognize the history of each program’s commitment to the sport of women’s ice hockey, as well as a tribute to the rivalry between programs.

Providence won the challenge with a total of 104 alumni who gave back to the program. UNH had 69 gifts. The Wildcats recognized the Friars’ victory with a pre-game ceremony when the teams met on Saturday, Jan. 20.

“I was blown away by the level of support and pride that my fellow women’s hockey alums displayed through this fundraising challenge,” Associate Head Coach and former player Melanie Ruzzi said. “Hearing from my former teammates and revisiting some old game video was a ton of fun, and the competition with UNH gave us a rare chance to battle together again. Thank you to the Friar women’s hockey family for helping us to victory and setting a great example for our current team.”
