Women's Ice Hockey Announces The Signing Of Two Student-Athletes

Jan. 14, 2009

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence women's ice hockey head coach Bob Deraney and his coaching staff have announced the signing of two players in the early signing period. The Friars feel they have built a solid foundation for the class of 2013 with newcomers Jessica Vella and Jessica Cohen. Vella currently plays for the Durham Junior Lighting in the Provincial Women's Hockey League (PWHL). "She is a high-energy right-shot forward from Pickering, Ontario. We love her competitiveness and desire to put the puck in the back of the net", says Deraney. She has 13 goals and 11 assists in 22 games thus far for Durham.

Cohen comes from Anchorage, Alaska and attends Shattuck St. Mary's, the alma-matter of Assistant Coach Meredith Roth. When asked about Cohen, Roth explains, "Cohen is a good two-way forward with excellent intelligence. She sees the ice extremely well and has a nose for the goal." Cohen ranks second on Shattuck St. Mary's with 76 points on 27 goals and 49 assists in 36 games this season. Coach Deraney adds "we expect both of these players to come in and make an immediate impact on our team."

Providence is next in action when they host Vermont for a pair of weekend games beginning Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m.. Game two begins at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday with both games being held in Schneider Arena.
