Lacasse Leads Canadian Under-22's to Gold in MLP Cup

Jan. 8, 2011

KREUZLINGEN, SWITZERLAND - Providence College women's ice hockey goalie Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) stopped all 37 shots she faced and led the Canadian Under-22 national team past Sweden, 6-0, to take gold in the MLP Cup.

For the tournament, Lacasse earned wins in both of her starts, stopping a combined 56 shots without allowing a goal.

The MLP Cup is a six-team, Under-22 tournament. The Canadians competed against Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany and the host Swiss. Canada has now won eight of the last nine events.

Lacasse previously represented her country this summer, squaring off against Friar teammate Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) and the USA Under 22's in a three game series. Lacasse won both contests she started. In September, the netminder was invited to Hockey Canada's evaluation camp in Calgary, a training session used to construct the Canadian National team.

The rest of the No. 8/9 Friars will be in action tomorrow (Sunday) when they visit No. 3 Boston University. Face-off at Walter Brown Arena is 3 p.m. The Friars next home game is Saturday, January 15. UNH will visit Schneider Arena for a 7 p.m. start. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GOPC.
