Jan. 4, 2012

ZLIN, CZECH REPUBLIC - Providence College women's ice hockey recruit Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) is competing this week for the US Women's National Under-18 Team at the World Championships. On Tuesday, the future Friar helped propel the red, white and blue into the semifinals, tallying a goal and two assists in a 13-1 victory over host Czech Republic.

Team USA will now play on Friday at 9 a.m. eastern against the winner of the Czech Republic/Germany match-up. The final is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Illikainen signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Friars next fall. The forward plays scholastically for Grand Rapids/Greenway, and was pacing her high school team with 25 points in 11 games before leaving to join Team USA. She is the first member of the Friar family to play for the U.S. Under-18 squad since current seniors Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) joined Friar Head Coach Bob Deraney on the 2008 team that won the World Championships.

The Friars will be back in action on Friday January 6, when they welcome Robert Morris to Schneider Arena at 7 p.m. The same teams will meet again on Saturday at Schneider with the puck dropping at 1 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GO PC or by visiting Friars.com.

On Tuesday, January 10, Providence will play the second, outdoor game in program history, facing off with Dartmouth at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass. The game will start at 3 p.m. and tickets are available by phone at 877-REDSOX9 and online at redsox.com/frozenfenway .
