Jan. 4, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The nationally ranked Providence College women's ice hockey team was recognized with two Hockey East awards this week. Freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) was named the conference's Pro Ambition's Rookie of the Month for December, while junior Jennifer Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.) earned the Pure Hockey Player of the Week honor for games played the weekend of December 31 through January 2.

Buie collected five points in the Friar's two December games. On December 4, the forward contributed three assists to propel PC to a 4-2 victory over rival New Hampshire. On December 5, Buie added a goal and an assist to lead the hosts past visiting UConn, 5-1. Buie currently has 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) through 21 games, a rate that is third best among conference rookies.

It is the first time Buie has won the monthly award. She has been named Rookie of the Week twice, with recognition on October 4 and December 6.

Friedman was lauded for her one goal, one assist performance in Sunday's 2-1 victory at Maine. The defenseman now boasts 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) and is plus-11 through 21 games this season. She is second in scoring among the conference's defensemen, one point behind Boston University's Tara Watchorn. She ranks sixth among the nation's blueliners in the same category.

It is the first time Friedman has won the award.

The Friars will be back in action on Sunday, January 9 with a 3 p.m. visit to No. 3 BU. Providence returns home on Saturday, January 15. New Hampshire visits Schneider Arena for a 7 p.m. face-off and tickets are available by calling the PC ticket office at (401) 865 GO PC.
