Box Score

Boston, Mass. - In their second consecutive road game against a ranked opponent from the ECAC Hockey League, the Providence College women's ice hockey team fell 2-0 to the Crimson of Harvard University, at the Bright Hockey Center. With the victory, Harvard improves to 12-2-0 on the season, whilethe Friars fall to 7-8-3.

Harvard opened the scoring early in the first period while while on the power-play, as Providence had two players in the penalty box. Sophomore Jenny Brine (Truro, N.S.) recieved a pass in the slot from Julie Chu (Fairfield, Conn.) and was able to beat Friar goaltender Danielle Ciarletta (Blaine, Minn) at the 3:26 mark. Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, Que.) was also credited with an assist on the play. The Friars generated their best scoring chance of the period when Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) found Danielle Tangredi (London, Ontario) with a pass at the top of the slot, but Harvard goaltender Brittany Martin (Torrance, Calif.) came up with the save. Ciarletta kept the Friars within striking distance with twelve saves in the period, including a glove save on a shot from the top of the crease by Harvard forward Kirsten Kester (Concord, Mass.) at the 4:45 mark.

After nine minutes of end to end action that saw Providence and Harvard generate several scoring opportunities apiece, Harvard would strike again at the 11:17 mark of the second period as Caitlin Cahow (Vinalhaven, Maine) scored from the top of the let face-off circle. Brine and Freshman Randi Griffin (Apex, N.C.) assisted on the goal. With fewer than ten seconds left in the period, Providence appeared to get on the scoreboard as the rebound from Meredith George's (Westwood, Mass.) wrap-around attempt was poked past Harvard's Martin, but the goal was disallowed as the play had been whistled dead.

Providence came out and controlled play in the Harvard defensive zone for much of the third period, but the Friars could not solve Martin. Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario) had one of the better scoring chances for the visitors after using a spin move along the far boards to beat the Crimson defense, but Martin came up with a right pad save at 5:15 of the period. The Friars out shot the Crimson 13-5 in the stanza. Martin finished with 25 saves in the victory, while Ciarletta registered 26 saves for the Friars.

Providence will return to action January 2, 2007 as they face the Big Red of Cornell University. The game will be played at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
