Women's Ice Hockey falls to No. 6 Dartmouth, 5-0

Hanover, N.H. - The Providence College women's hockey team traveled to Hanover, N.H. for a non-conference tilt with sixth ranked Dartmouth College at Thompson Arena. The Friars fell to Dartmouth 5-0, after holding the Big Green scoreless in the first period. With the win Dartmouth imrpoves to 10-3-0, and Providence falls to 7-7-3 overall. In the first period Providence and Dartmouth generated quality scoring chances but both Jana Bugden (Cornerbrook, Newfoundland) for the Friars, and Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta) for the Big Green came up with the nessecary saves to keep the game scoreless. Special teams play dominated the period as Providence was able to generate most of its scoring chances while on the power play. Backed by the goaltending of Clemis, who was forced to make 13 saves in the period, Dartmouth was able to kill off four Providence power-plays, including a two-man advatage to end the period. Play in the second period also featured a lot of special teams work by the Friars and the Big Green. Dartmouth produced the game's first goal while skating with the two-man advantage as Caroline Ethier (Montagmi, Que.) scored for the Big Green with a shot from the point that glanced off a Friar defender to beat Bugden at 2:25. Dartmouth then scored a short handed goal at 6:45 when Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) found the back of the net. Dartmouth would again capitalize while on the two-man advantage at the 10:08 mark with a second goal from Ethier. Dartmouth added another short-handed goal by Senior Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.), to finish the period with a 4-0 advatage. Dartmouth closed the scoring at 17:59 of the third period, as Sue Schmitz (Brookefield, Wisc.) scored off a pass from Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.). Bugden finished the game with 36 saves for the Friars. Clemis finished with 27 saves for the Big Green to earn the shutout. Providence will be back in action, Saturday, December 9, 2006 as they face #4/5 Crimson of Harvard University. The game will be played at the Bright Hockey Center and is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
