Women's Ice Hockey Defeats New Hampshire, 2-1
Dec. 3, 2000 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, 2-1, in ECAC action on Sunday, December 3 at PC's Schneider Arena. Junior forward Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored both goals to lead the Friars to their seventh-straight victory. UNH took a 1-0 lead at 16:50 of the first period when Allison Edgar (Brigden, Ont.) fired a wrist shot past Providence junior netminder Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla.). Mathias tied the game at 7:08 of the second period as she converted on passes from forwards Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) and Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Man.). The trio of Mathias, Tabb and Stephenson connected once again for what proved to be the game-winning goal at 10:35 of the second period. UNH was unable to tie the game in the final minutes of the game as they found themselves killing a two-man advantage for the Friars. The Wildcats pulled goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) with 69 seconds remaining but were forced to send her back between the pipes as UNH was whistled for icing with 15 seconds on the clock. Nicholas stopped 28 shots to help Providence improve to 10-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in ECAC play. Providence College returns to action on Saturday, December 9 when the Friars travel to Princeton for a 2:00 p.m. game.
