SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) recorded a goal and three assists and led the Providence College women's ice hockey team to a 5-0 victory over host Union Sunday at Messa Rink.
With the decision, Providence senior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) extended her school, shutout record. She now has 16.
Providence scored the lone goal of the first period. At 2:29 of the opening period, Anderson freed the puck off of the boards for senior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.). The speedy center attacked the net from the left side and was able to stuff the puck home inside the left post for her fifth of the season.
Providence extended the edge to 2-0 at the 14:00 mark of the second period. Again, it was Anderson digging the puck out of the corner and feeding sophomore Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.). The center used her speed to create a shooting lane in the slot and fired a forehand in for her seventh of the season.
Providence erupted for three more scores in the third. Just 56 seconds into the period, Anderson and Bacon combined to win possession along the boards and fed junior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario). Vella hammered in the puck from the right of the slot for her fourth of the year and 3-0, Friar lead.
At 16:52, senior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) delivered a pass to an awaiting Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) at the right of the doorstep. Hanrahan finished the play for her fifth of the year.
Finally, at 18:19, Anderson warded off a defender to claim position in front of the Union goal and steer home her first of the season, capping a four-point day for the forward and the 5-0 victory.
The Friars finished the month of the November with a 6-2-1 overall record.
This was Providence's first ever trip to Schenectady to play Union. Last season, PC defeated the Dutchwomen, 2-1, at Schneider Arena in the programs' first meeting.
The Friars return home on Saturday, December 3, when they host nationally-ranked Boston University. Face-off at Schneider Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GOPC or by visiting Friars.com.
