Hanrahan's Two Goals Power Friars To 2-1 Overtime Win At Maine

ORONO, Maine - The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Maine 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Harold Alfond Arena. Senior Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) scored both goals for the Friars, including the game-winning goal with 17 seconds remaining in overtime. With the win Providence moves to 2-11-3 on the season and 2-4-1 in Hockey East play while Maine now stands at 5-8-2, and 4-2-1 in Hockey East action.

Both teams skated through two scoreless periods to open the game. After two, Maine held a slight edge in shots, 21-18. Each team was effective in the penalty kill with the Friars fighting off two while the Black Bears killed one.

Providence scored first in the third period while on the power play. Senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) fed Hanrahan in front of the net, where she buried the puck for a 1-0 lead at the 12:33 mark. Junior Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) also assisted on the play. Maine's Morgan Sakundiak retaliated by collecting a rebound off of Jillian Langtry's shot to tie the score, 1-1 at 15:37. Kelsey MacSorley also tallied the assist. The period remained tied (1-1) to force an extra period.

In overtime, while shorthanded, senior Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) beat a Maine defender to win the puck in PC's offensive zone. She then wrapped around the net and fired a shot off, that hit the Black Bears goalie in the leg pad. The deflection went to Hanrahan whose slap shot found the back of the net for the overtime victory.

Junior Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) stopped 32 shots for the Friars while Meghann Treacy of Maine tallied 31 saves.

Both teams generated 33 shots in the game. Maine went 0-for-4 on the power play while Providence went 1-for-2.

The Friars will next compete in the 20th Annual Mayor's Cup on Friday, Nov. 28 at Brown for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match-up. The teams will also compete the following day (Saturday, Nov. 29) at Schneider Arena for a 1:00 p.m. game.
