PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) scored twice and classmate Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made 39 saves as the Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated visiting conference rival Northeastern, 4-1, Saturday at Schneider Arena.
The Friars' initial strike came on the power play at 6:33 of the first. Bacon's wrist shot from the right side of the attack zone deflected off a Huskie stick and into the top right corner of the net for her 10th of the season and a 1-0 PC edge.
Just one 1:45 later, Friar co-captain Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) fed freshman defenseman Rebecca Morse at the left point. The rookie blasted a slap shot through a maze in front and into the twine. 2-0 Providence.
The hosts added insurance 3:06 into the middle period. Bacon collected a turnover just inside the Huskie blue line, skated into the slot, and fired a low, hard wrist shot under goalie Florence Schelling's right pad for a 3-0 cushion.
NU's Katie MacSorely cut the deficit to 3-1 with a power play score 6:50 of the third period, tipping home a Stephanie Gavronsky shot from the point. Providence answered in similar fashion at the 10:28 mark. Junior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) stuck her stick in front of an Amber Yung blast from the near point, catching enough of the puck with the blade of her stick to deflect it home.
Both goaltenders were exceptional, with Schelling making 27 saves to Lacasse's 39.
The Friars complete the home-and-home weekend at Northeastern tomorrow afternoon. Face-off at Matthews Arena is 2 p.m. PC returns home next Sunday, November 28, to welcome Union to Schneider Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
