Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Niagara, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated Niagara University, 3-1, in women's ECAC ice hockey action on Sunday, November 19 at Providence, R.I. The Friars were led by freshman forward Gayle Shalloo (Scottsdale, Ariz.) who tallied one goal and one assist.

Providence got on the scoreboard first when junior forward Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.) scored on a pass from Shalloo from behind the net at 12:17 of the third period. Freshman defenseman Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) added a power-play goal at 15:01 when she scored on a rebound from a Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Niagara reduced PC's lead to 2-1 at the 15:50 mark when sophomore Valerie Hall (Niagara Falls, Ontario) beat Friar junior goaltender Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla.). Providence added an insurance goal at 18:58 as Shalloo scored on assists from Stephenson and senior forward Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.)

In goal, Nicholas posted a game-high 36 saves to lead the Friars to their fifth victory of the season.

Providence College will return to action on Saturday, November 25 when it faces Vermont at Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m.
