PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team earned a 4-1 win over Northeastern on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Schneider Arena. The Friars improve to 1-9-3 overall and 1-2-1 in Hockey East after posting their first win of the season.
After the first 20 minutes of play, the Friars held a 1-0 lead. Senior Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) netted a power play goal at 18:35 of the period. Providence controlled the puck in the Huskies' zone for the majority of the power play before sophomore Liv Halvorson (Richfield, Minn.) connected a pass to Micheletti. Micheletti's shot from the face-off circle beat Northeastern goaltender Chloe Desjardins to earn her second goal of the season.
Junior Brittney Thunstrom (Coon Rapids, Minn.) doubled the Friars lead (2-0), with an unassisted goal, just 25-seconds into the second period when she stole the puck behind the Northeastern net and sent a backhand shot by Desjardins. The scoring in the second period was completed at 8:59 when sophomore Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) skated in alone on Desjardins. Carels' first shot was saved by Northeastern's netminder, but Carels followed up on the play and scored on her own rebound. Sophomore Kendra Goodrich (Apple Valley, Minn.) and senior Suzie Lundeen (Minneapolis, Minn.) each recorded an assist.Senior Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) capped off the scoring in the game at 3:39 of the third period. Hanrahan's goal was assisted by junior Courtney Kukowski (Apple Valley, Minn.) to give the Friars a 4-1 lead.
Junior Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) had a strong game in goal for the Friars as she stopped 42 shots, surpassing her previous career high. Desjardins stopped 16 shots for the Huskies. Northeastern outshot the Friars, 43-20.
The Friars and Huskies will play the second half of the home-and-home series tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 16, at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. The game is set to start at 2:00p.m.
